Adrian,

Pistons are usually fitted (or should be) to one ten thousandths of an inch
by honing to size after the machinist measures each individual piston.  If
he bored it and then you bought pistons, that could be the problem (pistons
aren't always exactly the same size).  Did you measure the piston to
cylinder bore clearance with a feeler guage before installing the rings on
the piston?  What about ring end-gap (are ring ends butting together when
inserted in the cylinder by themselves? - are they the right rings?)  Did
the rings or pistons get damaged on installation?  If in doubt on any of
this, pull it apart and check everything (or have everything checked by a
competent machinist).  It's much easier to do it now and could keep you
from having to buy another set of pistons and further machine work.  Never
settle for anything less than perfection on the bottom end.
