My accelerator cable in my '79 Midget 1500 broke. I read somewhere on here
that a bicycle brake or derailleur cable had the same fitting, and guess what?
It really does fit--However, I ran into a problem! Havent worked it out yet,
so any ideas will be helpful. I replaced the whole cable. On removing the
old cable I noted that there was a brass fitting clamped around the old cable
and wedged into the hole through which the end of the cable enters the
footwell. The fitting was pretty much toast by the time I removed it.

I first ran the entire cable from inside the footwell out, only to find that
when the accelerator is depressed, THE WHOLE CABLE moved, rendering it
useless. SO, I stripped the interior cable from the casing, threaded it
through from the inside and ran the casing from Outside the footwell, jamming
the fitted end of the casing down into the footwell entry hole. NOW it would
not be pulled toward the accelerator lever when depressed. Now a new
problem. The footwell entry hole is not directly above the accelerator lever
(a British joke?), but is set back vertically about an inch from where the
cable actually fits to the accelerator lever. That means the cable must be
pulled at an angle from that hole, which means a lot of friction and binding.
NOW the accelerator would stick at whatever rpm I depressed it to. Carb
springs working fine. Release the accelerator lever from the cable, it worked
fine. But the sharp angle the lever pulled the cable from the hole created so
much friction it would bind it.

I have now tried removing the fitted end of the casing and run the entire
casing through so the cable would run directly from the casing--still bound.

Two questions: (1) Is it correct that the accelerator lever should NOT be
centered directly below the inlet hole for the accelerator cable?; and (2)
Should I get the proper accelerator cable from Vicky Brit and do it the right
way? --Auxillary question: If I do get the proper accelerator cable will it
come with the proper fitting to attach the cable to the entry hole?

What seemed like such a simple job has sent me to 4-letter wordland.
