I think Ulix is right on timing (pinging) being the most likely cause.  If
it is the chain, a loose timing chain can be detected with a timing light.
With the light hooked up, rev the engine at 3000 to 4000 RPM.  Hold rpm
steady and note position of timing mark.  It should be rock steady, any
movement (erratic behavior) indicates either a worn distributor or a loose
chain.
