I am running the Crane electronic/pointless ignition, and it specifically
says that a ballast resistor MUST be used if a "hot" coil is used (I guess
without an internal resistor?).

It reduces the voltage at the distributor to around 9-10 volts.

Something like that...... I only know what I read      :-)
