Hi Justin,

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but you will likely have to pull
it.  The problem most likely is that you have "overshifted" first gear. 
The first gear ring has gone too far forward or it's sliding base has
slipped a bit back and the result is the detent balls have started to
come off the base and are extended to the point that they won't push back
against their springs.  This is probably a result of an interlocking pin
and its mating pieces have become worn to the point it won't work right,
so the first gear ring go beyond where it should.

Even if you had access to remove the side cover plate and you could
depress each detent ball as you rotate the first gear and get it in
place, it will likely happen again in a short while.
