Hood release cable

I recently bought a hood release cable for my 69 Sprite. The kind they
sent has a t handle and a pictogram that looks like a 4 door car. i
finally got the car up on jack stands and removed the old cable(that is
seized and missing the handle) and find the hole in the firewall is too
small to push the new cable end through. Should I drill out the hole or
send it back and get a different cable? Should my car have t handle or
round knob, or does it matter?
