I used Plastikote Aluminum #207 for the wheels and Plastikote Universal
Black #203 for the inserts. Both of these are engine enamels and benefit
from baking to cure the paint. The result is hard and very durable, but
the black I used bakes out to a very glossy surface, which I like, but
which you don't want if you want the black to be matte finish. I painted
my wheels in 1996, and to date they have almost 20,000 miles on them and
still look great (see the Damask RWA Midget seen from the right side in the
screensaver). My wheels do not have a clearcoat.
There are all kinds of paint you can use, but as someone else's experience
points out, you need to be sure the paints are compatible. It's usually
safest to use only paint from the same manufacturer, but even some of these
are incompatible with each other if you don't allow the proper curing time
between coats. Some say to recoat within X hours, others say not to
recoat before Y hours. Read the directions. Generally, you don't want to
spray lacquer over enamel because it will craze the surface already
painted. Enamel over lacquer is O.K. And the surface can't be too clean
before you paint.
