Dear Listers,

I like to give a little update once I've posted a question on the list to
show everyone how things turned out. So here's more on my alternator light
coming on, chirping sounds from under the hood.

Well, before I got to the work, my alternator light went from occasional on
and off to full on all the time. I kept charging the battery at evening to
drive the next day. Yesterday I could take a look. First I tried
tightening the belt. No change in the light. Then I cleaned up a dodgy
looking contact on the thin wire going from the alternator to the ignition
switch (?). No change. Then I swapped in my spare alternator. Bingo!
I've got to take the bad one apart to see if I can see what went - diode
maybe? I only had that alternator a few months over one year. Seems too
short a lifespan to me.

I haven't tackled the water pump as I'm not sure it's bad. The chirp is
not there or much quieter now and I can't really see what I thought was
evidence of a leak anymore. On the other hand, the car is starting to run
a little hotter so.....

Anyway, that's where I'm at. I'm grateful to the suggestions made earlier
and I really love the support this list provides.

Safety Fast,
Philip
