Hi Paul,

The engines come out pretty easily, putting them back is a bit more
difficult. I prefer to take the engine and tranny seperately, but that's
just my preference. Get a good engine lift or hoist and some good chain. Be
careful with the sending unit for the water temp guage or you'll end up
having to replace or rebuild the whole guage (don't ask how I know
that).....

Other than that, it's pretty straight forward, most of the manuals have
pretty good instructions.

As far as what to do "while you are at it", that's purely up to you, and
your bank account. Does the engine have good compression, etc? One thing I'd
consider is doing the clutch while you are there if there is any question as
to the age or condition of the clutch. If your water hoses are questionable
I'd replace them also. Beyond that you could take it as far as you wanted,
really depends on what you want to spend and how long you want to take.

If the engine hasn't been out for a while you'll probably want to start
soaking the nuts and bolts with penetrating oil a.s.a.p.

Good luck,

Robert Weeks

List,

Because my local LBC mechanic is down on his back, I am going to have
to pull my motor and tranny to get to that transmission oil leak I asked
about last week. I've never pulled a motor and tranny before and would like
some help. Is there a post on the puddlejumper or elsewhere that can give
me some pointers before I start? I have a Haynes book but haven't looked
at it yet as I have just now made the decision to pull the motor on my own
this morning.

While the drivetrain is out, are there other parts that I should replace
while
I'm in there?

I have decide not to install a Datsun 5-speed in this Sprite until the
original
tranny dies...unless I can get a mint for it on ebay.

BTW, I have a non-bugeye 948cc in my garage I can let go cheap. Engine
number 9CG-DA-H 23615 (from a Midget?). No carbs no air cleaners. It
was installed in a bugeye while the bugeye's original motor was being
rebuilt. I've had it one year.

Nervously yours,
Paul
