I've been running the same set of timken roller bearings for 10 years now.
I would think the life would be about the same for quality bearings of
either type.

With ball bearings you better use the spacer.

I really don't know how you could use the spacer at all with the tapered
rolller bearings.  Unless you cut them down so they wouldn't interfere with
setting the preload on the bearings.  Which means they would have to be
loose on the axle and not restricting the bearings at all.

Should say on the package if the grease they come with is for shipping and
storage only.  When in doubt re-pack.

With the tapered roller bearings torque to 10 ft/lb and then back off 1/4 to
1/2 a turn to line up the slot and cotter pin.

with ball bearings and spacer you torque the nut until you can put in the
cotter pin.
