The distinctive smell of EP gear lube is a combination of the manufacturing 
process of long-chain polymer friction modifiers, high sulphur content,  and 
phospor based additives.  Long chains being hacked to pieces under tons of 
pressure per square inch give off an odor reminiscent of melted plastic. When 
exposed to a normally acidic environment, rich in sulphur and phospor, the 
stench gets downright unpleasant. The remaining odor-additives are a secret 
blend of exotic sawdust,  Old Spice,  case-hardened peanut butter, and eleven
