Chris,

Most likely the battery is a little low.  With the polarity
reversed most likely the generator wasn't charging.  Recharge the
battery and before reconnecting the negative cable to the battery
he will have to make sure that the generator has the correct
polarity.  Disconnect the 'D' and 'F' wires from the generator
connections and connect a wire from the negative battery terminal
and touch it a few times to the 'F' terminal on the generator.
This will repolarize the field windings and insure that the
generator will charge again.  Reconnect the 'F' and 'D' wires to
the generator and connect the negative lead to the battery.
Nothing electrical should have been affected other than possibly
the generators field polarity.   Hope this helps.
