Look at your ram pipe's flared ends - imagine that
flare being rolled all the way over on itself so that
it curls around into a very smooth inlet. 
Additionally, the inlet mouth of the FR stacks is
quite a bit larger.  All this add up to less inlet
pressure loss (resulting in more flow) and more of
that great Weber inlet HONK sound.  The book is very
clear on different types of ram pipes.
