Thanks everyone for the suggestions on and off list!

I bought a stethoscope and found that there isn't any more noise at
either end of the engine. So I don't think it's the harmonic balancer,
timing chain or the flywheel coming loose.

It MAY get better when the engine is warmer, but I'm not sure.
Pulling spark plug wires in turn doesn't get rid of the noise.

It may be piston slap about which I can't do anything right now. It may
be a wrist pin problem which may actually go away if the problem is that
it is a little stiff and needs to wear a little. But there doesn't seem
to be much I can do right now but to drive it. I just went for a little
spin and I can't hear anything from the driver's seat while driving, I
can sometimes make out something while idling. So the noise isn't real
bad. If it gets worse I will have to take things apart.

Now, find out why generator puts out 1 Volt, find why engine seems to
run on one carb at higher rpm (under full throttle only, I can rev it
high which part throttle), bleed the brakes again, get the idle smoothed
out, get a temp gauge and hook up the O2 meter. I'm supposed to be moving...

Thanks again,
Ulix (almost kinda Willy Nelson)
