I can't wait to see the replies to this thread.  

If the wire melts, you will still lose the lights, but you will also lose the 
wiring harness, and possibly set fire to the engine.  Let's say you have a 
short in the boot, next to the flexible gas filler and all those gas fumes.  
Would you rather it kept on arcing, or blew a fuse?  It is NEVER safer to 
melt a wire than blow a fuse, IMHO.
