Charles,

My 67 is different, and that is the only one I have experience with. I am
forwarding your email to the Sprite Midget Mailing List. Someone there
should be able to help

Patton

Subject: Engine backing plate

I am working on a 1964 Austin Healey Sprite. The car came to me after
someone had built the engine, installed it, and gave up on it before
completion. The problem is that after I got the car running I could not get
the clutch to disengage completely. The clutch seems to disengage but the
transmission grinds when I try to put it into any gear. However, I can start
it in gear with the clutch in and shift out fine until I put it into
neutral. I have been fixing British cars for over twenty years and am very
familiar with their clutch hydraulics. I am trying to find out if the
backing plate is the wrong one. This one is a piece of stamped out metal but
I have another old 1100 engine with a thick cast plate. I was wondering if
this plate might be off of a 948 engine and if it would even bolt up to this
block. I have not been able to find pictures or specks on these parts. Any
information will be appreciated.
Thank you,
Chuck
