I'm a little late following this thread, but all thru the '50s and '60s
a "churchkey" was a flat metal do-hickey with a curved, pointed
can opener on one end, and a slightly rounded and curved
bottle opener on the other. The can opener pierced the top
of the can near the rim, then made a wedge-shaped hole. The
bottle opener hooked on the ridge of a glass bottle and pried off
the metal bottle cap. I still need a churchkey for all the
home brew I make, bottle, and consume.
