Frank's right on the 5/8".   Per my understanding, that gives a 1 hour
rating and in residential construction, if there's a living space above the
garage, a double layer is required on the ceiling for 2 hours protection.
sheetrock on the walls with a hard surface of some sort up to about 3-4 feet
from floor would be my choice.
