If you run with plain water and have no anti rust inhibitor mixed with it, you
begin to have more problems than you ever care to know about. The cast iron
will
oxidize in plain water, creating a rust barrier to reduce heat transfer. There
is enough aluminum and die cast zinc in the water pump, thermostat housing,
heater base, and assorted other metals that will create electrolysis in the
cooling system that might create some thinner walls and consequently holes that
you don't need. Always use a rust inhibitor with water!!!
Ethylene glycol in anti freeze is pretty corrosive, but the manufacturers have
done a great job of neutralizing that with assorted chemicals. So, change your
anti freeze at least every couple of years to maintain it's effectiveness. Such
cheap engine and cooling system insurance!
If you want to see if your antifreeze is giving up the ghost with the loss of
it's inhibitors, stick the probes of your VOM into the solution with the voltage
on the lowest setting like, .5 volts. There should be no needle movement. If
there is, time for a flush and change.
