Yeah, and I don't think it has anything to do with how long your pipe is
(or isn't). I think it's the state of tune. Too rich mixture or bad valves
causing incomplete combustion. You notice it because it's so much stronger
of a smell than normal and it becomes pervasive. You might also have a
small exhaust leak further forward or in the engine bay itself.
