Hello list, I need to straighten this all out. What I meant was --"has anyone
ever had a car stolen from them " I didn't mean "did anyone ever steal a
car" I hope this clears up any misunderstanding. What I was trying to do is
develop a list of known stolen cars so I don't end up buying one.
As far as I have been led to believe, the "hidden" number bears no
correlation to the data plate screwed onto the frame by the carbs. I believe
these numbers were from the folks who stamped out the shells. If you load # 1
through #5 onto a truck and drive them to another factory, they get off
loaded in reverse order. Body shell #5 then would become car serial # 1. I
believe this is the case as I have NEVER seen these two numbers be the same.
They always seem to be close, say within 90 numbers or so, but never the
same. Any thoughts out there?
The "hidden"number would be hard to change, and would be better at
identifying a car, even if it were never really used by anyone. If I had a car
stolen, and I recorded this number, it would serve to identify it . Bob C
