Hi Sam, I had exactly the same issues when I converted my very unoriginal Mk2 
Sprite to 5-speed and alternator.  I have easy solutions that have worked very 
well for me where the stock speedometer is retained without any modification.  
The tach, however, is an electric unit from a (year?) Spitfire.  Although you 
can change the bezel, the face and needle are slightly different.  All this was 
simple and pretty inexpensive to do, but there is too much detail to type about 
via Email.  If the unoriginality doesn't offend you, please feel free to phone 
me and I'll fill you in on the rest of the story.

One of our local AHCA Atlanta clubmembers recently picked up a fairly
nice Bugeye that had been converted over to a Datsun 5 speed. The
question he had was what was needed to get a working speedo in the car
? Curently the car has an original Bugeye speedo with no cable
connection.
I'm sure this problem has been worked out since a lot of cars have
recieved this conversion.
Also, the car has a alternator installed in place of the original tach
drive generator hence no working Tach.
He'd like to keep the dash looking as original looking as posible but
stll have working instruments.
My only idea on the tach was to get one from a later car that was
electronic.
Any other ideas ?
