Hi List,

Thanks for all the replies on the wheel clamp. They all came through while
my computer was bust and I am catching up..........

Yup, I know the wire wheel clamp is not the same as the bolt on wheel clamp,
its also NLA and the s/h one I bought was specifically Midget wire wheel and
is just a fraction too short. I measured it just now and tip to tip it is 6
5/8" long so it definitely isn't for bolt on wheels (do you lot take me for a
dummy?????????)

I know I could do some kind of cut and shut or buy a length of bar thread it
and re-weld etc only.......... I had no money before I built this new PC and I
don't have a welder or taps, dies etc. Secondhand MGB wire wheel seems to be
the way to go and I'll sell or exchange the one I have that looks to be
Midget wire wheel and too short.

Finally, I think the head section is different on wire wheel to bolt on wheel
cars.

I went out to the garage and measured all my car's clamps and came up with
this:

74 Midget Rostyle wheel 5 1/4"
74 MGB Rostyle wheel 6 3/8"
68 MGB wire wheel 7"
Don't have a wire wheeled Midget (yet).
All 3/8" X 24 thread

When I put the 165 70's on the Midget, I had the same problem. I put a
thread connector (looks like a long hex nut) on the end of the clamp and cut
the head off of a bolt to screw in the other side. Screwed them both in and
out 'till I found the right length and spot welded them together. Kinda
crude, but works for me.

Thank you for kick starting my brain. I happen to have a clamp that is too
long for
the wire wheel in the Midget. Perhaps it is for a B, which I believe is what
Daniel
needs it for. If this is correct, please let me know, Daniel, and I will
search it
out and send it.

why not figure the extra length needed and cut the hold down in half and
have an apropriate length piece of an old 5/8" bolt welded in . that would
produce a custom hold down for your specific aplication. and it would look
stock when the boot is opened up! that would drive most owner's nuts
trying to figure out how you did that! subtle things like this drive the
other owners nuts trying to figure out how you resolved the situation and
kept it looking "stock". my bugeye looks pretty "sedate" under the hood.
but it is not! it's all in the custom work that was done to hide the
superior performance parts! he-he-he!

chuck.

I ran into the same problem with 175/70 tire on wire wheel spare. I am
using an MGB spare hold down from a Rostyle wheel B. It threads in the
same, and is longer than the spridget hold down, but not as long as the B
wire wheel hold down.

I'm thinking maybe you have the one for a disc wheel car(??) I would
think a "B" one would be longer as I had a WW B and I seem to
remember a significant difference in hub height when the wheel was
laid flat. Not sure on the thread, but I would think that would be a
match.

I have 175/70s on my car & the spare bolts down just fine.
