I can't address the rest of your questions, but I can tell you that a 1972
Midget came from the factory with the 3.90:1 diff, not the 3.37:1 diff which
only came in SpitMidgets made from 8/78 on according to Horler. Confirmation
is by counting the teeth (should be 10 on the pinion gear and 39 on the ring
gear for a 3.90) and/or by looking at the numbers stamped into the flange on
the removable portion of the diff after separating it from the axle
assembly. Of course those numbers merely tell what it should have been
originally; they don't seem to automatically update themselves when someone
commits surgery...
