I just went through this in NJ. If the repair cost is greater than 75%
of the car, they will not pay to fix the car they will total the car.
Sort of makes sense, if you have done 30K damage to a 40K car, it will
most likely never be right again.  It must be cheaper to total the car
then fight with the insurers and the repair shops over the work, from
the insurance companies point of view..

I agree - it makes sense if your car is 3 years old but the math doesn't work
if the car is 30 years old and a crumpled fender turns into Totaled. It is a
failure to differentiate between economically unsound vs.
mechanical/structural unsoundness.
