the pinion seal can be replaced by just removing the flange, and R&R the
seal and carefully tighten the flange nut to a very tight state but do not
retorque to a zillion foot pounds.
now, a noisey diff. is usually a result of bad bearings. shimming the
pinion will only give you a false sense of reloading the pinion bearings and
moving the pinion to ring gear contact area from an established wear pattern
to a new wear area wich no doubt will only last a short time as the contact
pattern is most likely no longer at an optimum state.
reusing the crush collar and properly shimming the pinion to get it to the
proper depth in the housing is a critical adjustment. it is not a dark
science only practiced after shaking a string of plastic beads and a
sacrifice off a rubber chicken! pinion depth, pinion drag in it's bearings
and proper contact of ring gear to pinion and resulting lash is not an easy
as 1-2-3 operation. but yet it is a "do-able" job. it is not an easily
explained via this media operation! it is a very tactile operation! once
you do one you are certified "expert" by evryone around you! :)

chuck.
same darn bugeye , going on 30 years now!
