Good question, Dave.

The head is cast iron and warps beyond
220 or so, right? Of course, that's all torqued down. Hmmmmm! What would
happen to the "ovality" of a cast iron brake
drum baked at 400F for 20 minutes or so?

I usually wire brush them and paint them
with black Hammerite (gloss) when RR time comes for the rear brake
shoes.

Matter of fact, unless they're truly rusty
no one but you and I will really notice. A
good coat of Rustoleum semi-gloss would
probably do as well.
