I don't want anyone to out
their age, but I have a
question to ask. I was out
cruising the flea market
today, and one of the vendors
brought out an interesting
lighter. Yeah, I know I don't
smoke, but it was pointed out
to me that most of my
collectibles have something to
do with FIRE!! "uh,
settle down, Beavis"
Anyway, I have this strange
lighter, still in the box. It
is called "The AirTeam
windproof lighter. No flint,
no wick, no moving parts. It
was awarded the gold medal at
the Luxembourg International
Fair in 1952. In the box, is a
small bottle, the bottom 1/4
has what smells like denatured
alcohol, and a pair of small
gold tubes that look to have
tampons shoved into about half
of them. The other half of the
tube has a metal frame holding
a small bit of metal that will
move a bit. The tube has a
hole in the side, right at the
bottom of the frame. The
seller tells me that you soak
the cotton with the alcohol,
replace the bottom half cover.
You then smartly (briskly)
remove the cover off of the
framework side of the tube,
and it is "supposed" to light.
I am not having any luck. I
can supply photos if it would
help.
So, does anyone on this list
know anything about these type
of lighters. I probably
shouldn't have bought it, but
I am a sucker for a $5
antique. BUT, it isn't an
antique (in my book) until the
damn thing works. Till then,
it's a busted piece of crap
still in the box (much like
Frank's much beloved brand new
Chinese products!)

TIA,

Brad
