Mark:

The timing may be fine per the book specs, but try advancing the timing just 
a bit more.   If it is backfiring through the carb, I would suspect the timing 
may be off just a bit.  I am running a DGV on my '79 and have to keep the 
timing advanced just a bit more than spec.  Also, one of the hallmarks of the 
DGV 
is a slight stumble at take-off.  Double-pedaling the accelerator helps.
