whew!
the most common reason a spridget gear box locks up in first gear is the
detent balls for the synchroniser have come out of their recessed holes just
far enough to neither go back in or come completly out! there is a simple
yet pain in the tush repair that numerous BMC gold seal gear boxes had done
to them. you must remove the gear box from the car and pull the rear tail
housing off . remove the frist / second gear shift rail and place a washer
onto the shaft and reinstall the shaft , and reassemble the gear box. the
washer (not a paper thin one yet not as thick as the intake / exhaust
manifold washers!) limits the travel of the shaft just enough to no longer
over extend the travel of the first gear throw. now of course you are very
carefully pulling the shift railback while pushing the detent balls back
onto their holes. if the balls 1 or more are already in the bottom of the
gear box then you must disassemble the whole gear box to reassemble the
frist / second gear synchroniser.
it sounds hard yet it is rather easy to do.

chuck
been there ....broke that....fixed it at least twice since then.....(hey!
i've had the darn car for 30 years now. and considering the abuse i have
given it, i'm impressed it is still in one piece at all!)
