many thanks to all for the suggestions on my 25 PSI compression readings
on all 4 cyls of my Carlisle 1275.
I checked the valve lash, all were good, a few too loose.
I checked the timing marks, dead on and a normally loose chain, not
extremely loose.
So off with it's head. All valves are in tact and seated, a bit coked up
but I have seen much worse. No holes in the pistons, no scores or holes
in the cylinders. All freeze out plugs in tact. A flush of the engine's
water jackets resulted in some antifreeze coming out. No water in the oil.
So I checked my USA made compression gauge, 100 psi from the compressor
showed 100 psi on the gauge. 50 > 50, and 25 > 25 so my gauge is OK.
This engine appears to have never been apart, no blown head gasket
either. Rings hold oil.
I give up but it's all apart now and I will rebuild it.
Maybe it's just all worn out very evenly.
