I once assisted in mating a 'breathed on' MGB engine to a VW Microbus
gearbox for a mid engined single seat circuit racing toy.
Beware - they can be mounted upside down - don't ask!

Not to give your son any ideas, but...

I did see in an issue of VW world someone who transplanted a Porche 911
flat six into a microbus. Made quite an interesting custom.
