Pat....

somewhere in the almost long forgotten past, I have heard of oil leaking into
the fuel in a worn mechanical pump....but this
just a faint notion of a memory so to speak.

When valve guides are leaking oil, only the
"intake valve" side of the center electrode
will show burnt oil deposits.....when it's rings, the center electrode is
uniformly
covered in this respect (unless there IS
oil leaking into the fuel via a "bad" mech.
pump).

Another hint....if the oil is merely leaking
via the valves (or maybe by a faulty pump,
in this case) the oil within the sump will stay
pretty clean between changes, whereas....

if the oil is getting past the rings (blow-by) the oil in the sump gets pretty
black pretty
quickly, after a change.
