I recall that article David mentioned re:
converting a grease gun to an oil gun
however, oil guns which fit zerks are usually carried at Marine supply shops
(got one myself). 

Another thing which can be done is to load
oil directly into the boots by simply removing a boot clamp and pumping oil in
by a hand-held. A small amount can also
be loaded via the aperature wherein 
adjustment by shim takes place where the
steering column intercepts the rack.

Of course, measured strokes with an
oil gun is really the "proper" way to go. :)
