I thought I might chime in again. 

We bought a 2002 low miles Miata last fall to serve as my wife's 
commuter car.  It is way too quiet at idle; standing next to it, I'm 
never sure if it's running.  But from the driver's seat as I wind it 
through the gears, it makes a nice throaty sound.  I speculate what that 
might be like with a more open exhaust, but for now, my wife prefers the 
stealth mode of the current setup.  Now if something were to happen to 
that stock exhaust, I might need to replace it.
