There is always a fix ;)
There is (was) a little spring hooked to a lever that works the odometer.
Most likely that spring popped off. I am sure it's somewhere in the 
speedo, hopefully still attached on one end.
This is tweezers work and a good magnifying glass.
While you are in there and the spring is off, why not set it back to a 
mileage that suits the looks of the car. Say 23,000 ;)
