Don't hold your breathe, Alan. The stupid fact is that eBay is not
interested in any frauds unless it is reported by a buyer. My wife's
great-uncle was, with Remington and Russell, one of the three great
cowboy artists of the early 20th century. I am also somewhat of an
authority on his work, and have advised Christies and famous dealers on
paintings they were going to offer. In daily viewings on eBay, I have
spotted numerous forgeries purportedly by Uncle Bert, as well as some of
his New Mexico "group". Although other experts have given eBay the same
warning, not once has spurious painting been withdrawn. The standard
reply was that they (eBay) simply provide a place where sellers and
prospective buyers can meet, and they have no responsibility regarding
any fraud. Fortunately, we twice had better luck with the New York
Attorney General who gained two separate convictions.
