I think they need to be heated to 600* and it has to be done quick.
Go to a machine shop, the last thing you want is to have your wrist pins walk out and score the cylinder walls.
At $5 a piston, it is well worth it. I don't think my machinist charges me $5, more like $2 or 3 each.
