I bow to David's experience!! I was able to get my engine out as
David describes, but it was a VERY tight fit and I didn't relish
trying to get it back in that way. I found it to be a bit less
demanding to put the engine back with the gearbox attached, but - as I
said - I've only done this once so caveat emptor...
