Same thing happened to my daughter when she returned from France with
~250 pictures on an SD
card and tried to look at them on her camera with low batteries. The file
pointers got messed up and
she got the format card message.
I found some photo recovery software on the Internet and ordered it.
Salvaged almost all of the photos.
NFI and YMMV but it worked for me: http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/
