Correctness question

I am rounding up parts for my next project. A 58 Sprite.
I have a question on the door check strap metal pieces.
Are they supposed to be interior color (red in my case) or were they all 
black?
I seem to recall tan painted check strap metal pieces in tan interiors 
that I have taken apart. Or some PO painted them.
