Hi Mark,

thanks for your message, but I don't need Jeff's advice as I have ported
vacuum on my HD8's (Austin-Healey 3000). I run a distributor from 123ignition
which is prepared to run on ported vacuum AND manifold vacuum. It has a
feature which is called 'gearshift retard'. In case the vacuum increases to
more than 18 inchHg, the vacuum advance drops to 0 degrees.

This is for 2 reasons. If the vac line is connected to the manifold and your
car idles, the vacuum normally has a value higher than 18 inchHg but the
engine doesn't need any advance. Secondly, when you drive and shift gears and
close the throttle while shifting, the vacuum is again higher than 18 inchHg
(same principle as when idling).

I'm convinced, your described problem would have been solved with this dizzy.
Plus you would have 16 different advance curves to select from. To select one
or another curve would not mean you would have to disassemble the dizzy, have
some suitable springs available (which wear after a short time and are not
half as exact as electronics) and try them out. No need to send the dizzy
anywhere again and again, as if you're serious about exact timing you'll have
to regraph the dizzy at least every 2-3 years. On the 123ignition it's just a
matter of turning a screw on the underside of the body of the dizzy to select
one of sixteen defined curves. And no worries about rotor and cap. These are
standard Bosch items which you can buy for a couple of Dollars anywhere.

For more info have a look on my website or drop me a line.

Regards

Eric
