Just make it very very small because as it is now, you can't get in 
there to do much of anything let alone fit a tool in there.
Like I said, it's a piece of cake on the bench and this tool will make 
it even easier on the bench. I bet it would be a real PITA under the 
car, over the axle and needing 6 hands to do it.
I like 'David's screw idea.
And yes, I have welded them to the back plate with luck.
