Non-vacuum advance distributors are more rare and some feel that they are a
performance upgrade. They were originally used on Cooper S and some other
factory performance engines. But, they are not necessarily better than
vacuum advance units. Vizard tends to recommend vacuum advance. Both
vacuum and mechanical dizzys can be made to work well in applications from
stock to all out racing. The real advantage to the mechanical is when you
have a hot carb like a Weber sidedraft or a supercharger and general vacuum
is hard to find.
Unless you are racing at high RPMs all the time you will probably be better
with vacuum advance.
I've had two mechanical dizzys. One went to a lister, (Frank, maybe?) and
the other to a local friend. The friend was having trouble because he was
running a Weber downdraft and I think his dizzy wanted to see ported vacuum.
In the end you can use it. It may work better in your application. Also,
it is worth quite a bit more than you average dizzy.

Cheers,
Derf
