Linda,
Beware of non-running old cars of any make. If you can't start and
drive it, you will not be able to evaluate the rest of the
mechanical/drivetrain components and could end up spending a small (or
not so small) fortune on getting the thing up and running.
You mention The Samba website, which is excellent. Check out LiMBO
(Late Model Bus Owners) and some of the other VW Type 2 owners groups.
They also have excellent websites and offer a lot of technical support.
As I recall, you are located in the Philadelphia area. If so, you will
not want to miss Import Carlisle, the 3rd weekend in may. There's
always an very large selection of Brit car and VW parts available, as
well as a large selection of vehicles for sale, from projects to fully
restored. Shame on you for six weeks if you miss it!

Hi Bud,
Thanks for the tips. I am currently checking out 2 1978 buses non
running
for asking prices of $1500. my mechanic is going to set me up with
friends
who are into VW's. I found a great site www.thesamba.com with forums and
getting lots of help like with the Spridget list serve. Sounds like the
fuel
injection of the 78 may be the ticket for my first VW. And it would be
great
to find a 1 owner I may keep looking.

BTW I suppose so long as my Sprite continues to keep the garage she
won't be
jealous about a VW in the driveway : )

Thanks for the support,
Linda
