Sputtering on the highway

The weather was great today, so I drove the Midget to work. The morning
drive was uneventful (temps upper 40s), but on the drive home (temps low
70s), the car began to stutter while on the highway. I'd been driving
for about 1/2 hour at 70-ish mph (about 4000 rpm). I hit some traffic
and had to slow down, and on acceleration it would stuttuer again, with
a strong smell of raw fuel. Oil pressure seemed OK, water temp was about
190.

I stopped off the highway to take a look under the bonnet. There was no
sign of fuel leakage (though it was quite hot under there, if there was
any fuel it had probably evaporated).

I drove home by the back roads, keeping around 50-55 mph. The water temp
cooled down to 180-185, and the stuttering became more inffrequent.

Any ideas what this might be?

My suspicion is that the gas is getting hot enough to boil in the float
bowls, but I can't say for sure. I do have a heat shield in place.

What do you guys think?
