Basically 'cause we-really-tight.

The ribcase was fried, no second gear. I had the smoothcase and it ran 
strong when I pulled it out of my parts car. Someday I'll have the money 
for the 5 speed Datsun conversion but I didn't want to take the car off 
the road until then. All it cost me to get it back on the road was my 
labor and the cost of the paint, oil and antifreeze which is about all I 
can afford at the moment.
