The odds that PCV will solve a blowby problem big
enough to blow oil out the dipstick are pretty low.
Back to the original question, you probably don't need
to get as far as a leak down test. The leak down tells
you whether you've got a leaky valve, head gasket, or
rings. You're blowing air past the rings. A
compression test will probably tell you which cylinder
it is. If that's inconclusive, the leak down will help
isolate the rogue cylinder. I made a hillbilly leak
down tester using the fitting off an old compression
gauge / hose hooked into a barbed fitting downstream
of a low pressure regulator on a portable air
compressor. Here's the idea:
