Thanks Ed, but I have done all of that
The setup assistant test produces a good quality and volume of test sound on
my computer

I get the webcam, but no sound.
I have not seen an invitation to a conference

So the drill IS:

Open Yahoo Messenger (skinny window on my right & shows "floundervision...";
Open MESSENGER;
Select "Preferences",
Select "Calling & Audio",
OPEN the "bar" labeled---Open the Call Setup Assistent";
follow instructions.

If you ARE seeing the webcam you HAVE been OK'd.
