You really need to see what apps are auto-starting when you boot up.
Every app that is running is stealing resources from what you
want to do.

Betcha if you hit alt-ctrl-del and look at the apps and processes
that are running (and using resources) you will be surprised.
You can go into the registry to fix this, or click start>run>msconfig
to control auto-starts.

I keep all my data on other drives so that every 6 months or so
I can format c: and reinstall the op sys and any apps. All my data,
including email, addresses, bookmarks, spreads, whatever
is on D: and above.
